The first Public Lecture organized by Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee for the year 2018 was successfully held at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka from 5.30 pm onwards on 12th January 2018.

The resource person was Dr. Sachinthaka Abhayawadhana,Sachinthaka who completed his PhD in Bayesian Machine Learning. He is the author of DeepSchool.io, an
open source and free framework for teaching Deep Learning to software engineers.

The way that the latest trends of Artificial Intelligence that have been into fruition with advancements in medicine, self-driving cars, cybersecurity, robotics etc. which has led to a large hype about the imminent destruction of humanity, fuelled by comments from entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk were explained in detail during the lecture. The current State of AI and the challenges it would present were discussed in depth along with how Sri Lanka can take advantage of the AI revolution to strengthen Industries. A question and answering session held after the lecture was very helpful for the audience to clarify their AI related queries.
