    Women Engineers’ Day  organized by the Women Engineers Forum (WEF) of the IESL was held on Tuesday, 23rd February, 2016 at the the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the institution. The Chief Guest at the event was Eng. (Dr.) Mrs. Premala Sivaprakasapillai Sivasegaram, the first lady engineer the country ever produced. The lighting of the traditional Oil Lamp  was followed by the very warm welcome speech made by Chairperson of the Women Engineers' Forum Eng. (Mrs.) Thamara  Mallawaarachchi. The IESL President, Eng. Wimalasena Gamage in his speech appreciated IESL Women Engineers Forum for organizing the event and the encouragement they are providing towards women engineers’ participation in IESL activities. The address by the Chief Guest followed that. Eng. (Mrs.) Wanesha Kanakaratne, Joint Secretary to the Forum  proposed the Vote of Thanks. President Elect, Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, Council Member, Eng. Prabodha Jinasena , Chief Executive Officer of  IESL,  Eng. (Dr.) Jagath Peiris and Deputy Executive Secretary of IESL, Mrs. Badra Jayaweera  graced the occasion with their presence. The Tea Break was followed by a much appreciated presentation by  Mrs Aruni Wickramage on “ Personal Grooming “ . The forum’s  activities for the day concluded with its Annual General Meeting and lunch.

    Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA) has bestowed the honour of  being its President for the next two years on Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, President Elect of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL).

    Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, has been unanimously elected to the post at the 14th General Assembly of the FEISCA held on 18 February, 2016 at Kathmandu, Nepal.

    FEISCA came in to being as a direct response to the need for the  assistance of engineering professional bodies  to the UN  system and provides opportunity for the non-government organizations engaged in engineering education and training to discuss the issues of improving professional collaboration to provide an effective working mechanism to the UN system. It has membership of engineering professional bodies from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka

    Eng. Meegoda takes over from incumbent president,  Er. Sham Lal Garg, Immediate Past President of the Institution of Engineers (India).  This is the second time since its inception in 1979 that a Sri Lankan is at the helm of this reputed collation of national bodies, Eng. (GP Capt.) P Merveyn Gunasekera, the then president of the IESL being the first to have held the FEISCA presidency during 2000 – 2002 period. Congratulations and best of wishes to Eng. Meegoda  for a most productive presidency of the FEISCA.

    The IESL commemorated the 112th  birth anniversary of Eng.(Prof.) Robert Haisington Paul, (popularly known as R. H. Paul) with a memorial lecture held at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the institution on Tuesday, 9th February, 2016 from 1715 hours. This year the lecture was delivered by Eng Prof . Manjula Fernando -  Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. It was on the theme ‘The Research Bridge between University and Industry: Condition Monitoring Perspectives’.

    The lighting of the traditional oil lamp and garlanding of the portrait of the late Professor by the President of the IESL, Eng. Wimalasena Gamage, preceded the delivery of the memorial LECTURE.

    Welcoming the audience Eng. Wimalasena Gamage stated that the IESL devoutly commemorates birth anniversaries of engineering greats who have passed away after doing yeoman service towards the development of the country and to improve the living standards of fellow countrymen. He stated that Prof. R.H.Paul is known as the Father of Electrical Engineering Education in Sri Lanka, a title which he aptly deserves as he had played a vital role in the history of Development of Engineering Education in the country. The late Professor had been the President of the IESL in 1968, he added.

    The memorial lecture had been organized by the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Sectional Committee of the IESL. Family members of the late Professor and large number of members of the institution attended the commemoration.

    Professor Buddhima Indraratna, Director of Centre for Geomechanics and Railway Engineering (GRE) at the University of Wollongong and a world-leading geotechnical expert on road and rail infrastructure, has been promoted to one of the highest echelons of the Australian professoriate structure, the rank of Distinguished Professor, and he becomes the inaugural Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering at University of Wollongong, Australia. 

    Recently, he also received three prestigious felicitation honours in geotechnical engineering: 1st Ralph Roscoe Proctor Lecture for Transport Geotechnics and 4th Louis Menard Lecture for Ground Improvement of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, and Thomas Telford Premium award from the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK for his major contributions that have made an impact to industry, both in Australia and internationally. Prof Indraratna was also chosen as the recipient of 2015 Individual Award of Railway Technical Society of Australasia (combined Institutions of Engineers Australia and New Zealand), which he received from the State Minister of Transport at the New South Wales Parliament House in October 2015.

    The awards ceremony for the  Engineering Excellence Awards 2015, the premier event in the country for rewarding outstanding achievements  by engineers and engineering enterprises organized by the IESL was held at the Waters Edge on Tuesday, 26th January, 2016 from 7.00 pm onwards. Mr. Kiyoshi Amada, Chief Representative of Japan International  Cooperation Agency (JICA) Sri Lanka was the Chief Guest and Vidya Jyothi Prof. K.K.Y.W. Perera, Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa was the Guest of Honour for the   event. A large gathering comprised of individuals and organizations who vied for the different categories of awards, Council Members and  Past Presidents of the IESL as well as invitees and staff of the IESL Secretariat were present. The presentation of awards were done amidst entertainment provided by the all engineers music group ‘ Music Engineers – IESL’  and the Channa Upuli Performing Arts Foundation dancing troupe. The event concluded with Refreshments and Dinner.

    Uva Chapter organized three religious events to commemorate the 110th year of IESL culminating in the Bhodhipuja ceremony at Badulla Mutiyangana Rajamaha Viharaya on 7th January at 5.30 p.m. and about 30 Engineers of IESL Uva Chapter participated for this event.

    Established  under its colonial era predecessor, Engineering Association of Ceylon, the IESL will soon reach its 110 years of existence since its establishment in 06th January, 1906. An all-night Pirith ceremony held on Sunday, 3rd January, 2016 at its  head office in Colombo and the Alms-giving that followed started off the many religious ceremonies that  would be held, both in  Colombo  and at IESL Chapters in the provinces, to mark the reaching of this important milestone. While a  multi-religious ceremony at 10.00 A.M. at the head office on 06th January, 2016, will mark the exact day of 110th anniversary, in Colombo  other religious ceremonies are to be held  by the IESL Chapters in the provinces.

    Members and staff of the IESL together with their families had an enjoyable Christmas Party  Tuesday, 22nd December, 2015 from 5.00 pm onwards  in the pleasant settings of the  institution’s   refurbished Members’ Lounge . The tradition, revived after a lapse of many years, saw enthusiastic demand for participation which was limited to a little above 100 Corporate Members and their families by prior registration on first- come- first-served basis. President of IESL, Eng. Wimalasena Gamage  welcomed the invitees to the party at which the blessings were performed by Parish Priest, Reverend Father  Chandana.  Christmas Carols were sung first by Senior Choir (CML) accompanied by Eng. Dharshana Perera. The Junior Choir accompanied by Mrs. Indramali Fernando sang thereafter ending the carols  with a medley of Christmas songs. Santa Claus entered to their singing ‘Jingle Bells’ and distributed sweets to the children. The rest of the party was enjoyed in fun filled games both for children and adults. Christmas Cakes and the Welcome Drink formed the changeover menu while Hoppers and Kottu were served for dinner. Congratulations go to Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake and the organizing committee for successfully organizing this event and reviving this much enjoyed tradition of the IESL. Appreciations also go to Eng. Kosala Abeysiriwardene, Eng. K.P.I.U. Dharmapala, Eng. Russel de Zilwa, and Eng. Mangala  Silva for their generous donations towards organizing  the event

    The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) has awarded its 2015 medal of Excellence in Engineering Education to  Eng. Chandana Wirasinghe. The biannual award honours individuals with noteworthy contributions to the improvement of engineering education and significant educational accomplishments. Eng. Wirasinghe is an Anandian, Peradeniya graduate (1968), and was Hon. senior professor at the University of Moratuwa. A Berkeley PhD (1976), and Fulbright Scholar (1972-76), he became the dean of the Schulich School of Engineering, Canada, in 1994. He held the post until July 2006, and advanced the school to be one of the best in Canada. A  longtime academic director in the Centre for Transportation for the Van Horne Institute, Canada, he continues to be active in APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) and Engineers Canada activities. He is the founder of the International Institute for Infrastructure Resilience and Reconstruction (IIIRR), a network that works on disaster mitigation research. He is also a founding Canadian member of the Committee on Disaster Risk Management of the WFEO.

    The annual Ray Wijewardene Memorial Lecture for the year 2105 was held at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) on Monday, 30th November, 2015.  Mr. Deepal Sooriyaarachchi – Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission delivered this year’s lecture on the topic ‘Shall We Nationalize Innovation' which dealt with how to integrate the culture of innovation in to wider society making innovation relevant not only to business and education but also to life itself.

    The memorial lecture was organized jointly by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka and Ray Wjewardene Charitable Trust, a  charitable organization established for the promotion of the vision and ideas of Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene . The lecture was preceeded by the traditional lighting of the Oil Lamp and garlanding of the portrait of Late Dr Ray Wijewardene by the President of  the IESL,  Eng. Wimalasena Gamage. The Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene  Memorial Lecture was  first held in 2011 and this is the 5th lecture of its kind to held. Welcoming the capacity audience that attended  Eng. Wimalasena Gamage described the Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene as a person who excelled in many human endeavors.  Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, Chairman of the Ray Wijewardene Charitable Trust briefed the audience  about  the work that the Trust is involved in in promoting the vision and ideas of Later Dr. Ray Wijewardene
