    Techno Sri Lanka 2017, the national engineering and technology exhibition and flagship event of the IESL was ceremonially launched at Hotel Galadari on Monday, 9th June, 2017 from 6.00 p.m. onwards in the presence of a packed audience. Mr. Karunasena Hettiarachchi , Defence Secretar, was the Chief Guest for the occasion which was attended by a large number of stakeholders including Engineering Professionals, Business Heads of leading industries and organizations related to engineering and technology and media.

    Welcoming the audience, President of IESL, Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda,  briefed about the developments that exhibition has seen through the years since its inception in 1985 and its status today as the national engineering and Technology exhibition

    The President Elect of IESL & Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for Techno Sri Lanka 2017, Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake explaining this years’ exhibition theme; “EMPOWERING INNOVATION” with the Tagline; SMART, INVENTIVE, DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT  stated that the world is changing and engineers are in the forefront of this change.  She stated that expectations are very high in today’s society, however, the Planet’s resources are fast depleting and engineers have to be smart and innovative to achieve high goals with very low resource consumption. She added “ Technology should reach the masses and make them do things differently, as doing ‘business as usual’ will not leave a healthy planet for our children and grandchildren. We need ‘disruptive technologies’ that will revolutionize the day-to-day activities, such as mobile technology, nanotechnology, household solar PV technology and perhaps other inventions and breakthroughs to satisfy the society’s expectations and still not be blamed by our future generations for not leaving them a livable Planet Earth.”

    Chief Guest, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, in his speech laid stress on the importance of Innovation in the country’s forward march. He added that the 3 armed forces has decided to display and demonstrate their achievements of the R & D efforts at the Techno Sri Lanka this year.

    The’ Techno Talk’ this year was delivered by the Guest Speaker Eng. (Prof.) Rohan Munasinghe and it was on the interesting topic of ‘Local Technological Development Efforts and Experiences’

    Speeches were also delivered by representatives of various sponsors of the event.

    The event concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by  Vice President of IESL, Eng. Kamal Laksiri and Cocktails that followed.

    The IESL held its ‘BaK Maha Ulela’ 2017 new year festival on Saturday, 29th April 2017, from 8.00am to 5.00pm,  at the  Colombo 7 premises of the Women’s International Club.

    A day full of Fun & Games, members and their families participated in traditional festivities of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The event opened with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, followed by the national anthem and welcome speech by IESL President, Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda.

    The organizing committee had made every effort to make this year’s  event extraordinary, going in to details arranging not only the usual Fun and Games but also taking all the trouble to bring in artistes for demonstration of the martial arts practiced by the ancient Sinhalese as a special item for the occasion.

    The day was filled with all the traditional games;  Breaking pots blindfolded, Bun eating with hands tied back, Racing with lime fruit balanced on a spoon held in the mouth, Musical Chairs, Gunny bag racing, Couples feeding yoghurt blindfolded, Hula Hoop, Tug of War, Fancy Dress competition, etc. lined for children as well as adults to enjoy the day in full.

    A memorandum of understanding was signed between the IESL and UltraTech Cement Lanka (Pvt) Ltd whereby the Building Clinic conducted by the IESL will receive support of the latter as a financial and logistics partner for a  2 year period effective 1st June, 2017. UltraTech Cement Lanka (Pvt) Ltd have been supporting  the programme during past 2 years as well for successfully carrying out 6 programmes in various parts of the country.

    The “Building Clinic” is a concept initiated and developed by the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee of IESL to offer professional advice free of charge to the needy people having no access to proper technical advice, information or knowledge for building their homes.

    The signing ceremony took place at around 3.00 pm on Friday, 16th June, 2017 at the Council Room of the IESL. Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, President of IESL and Mr. Kiran Redkar, Chief Executive of UltraTech signed on behalf of their respective institutions. Eng. Neil Abeysekara Deputy Executive Secretary and Eng. Niyas Samad, Chairman, Civil Engineering Sectional Committee  signed as witnesses for IESL. Mr. Sandeep Holey, General Manager (Technical & QA),UltraTech. and Mr. Ananda Silva, Assistant General Manager ( Technical), UltraTech signed as witnesses for M/s UltraTech Cement Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.

    The signing ceremony was also attended by Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake – President Elect of IESL and Eng. Probodha Jinasena whose original  idea was the concept of the Building Clinic.

    Speaking at the event Eng. Meegoda while thanking UltraTech Cement for their sponsorship during the previous two years as well, invited the latter’s assistance to conduct much vigorous programmes in view of its heightened relevance due to impacts of recent floods and landslides experienced in the country. Mr. Redkar expressing his pleasure in signing the MoU for another 2 years said he looked forward to conducting more than the 6 programmes carried out during the previous 2 year.

    The target group of this session was newly recruited Engineers to Sri Lanka Railway. Thirty one (31)  Engineers from Mechanical, Electrical and Civil categories attended for session conducted at the IESL HO Membership Lounge. The session started sharp at 6.00 pm.

    IESL Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee Chairperson- Eng. Arjuna Manamperi - gave an introduction and Eng. (Dr.) Palitha Bandara gave a 45 min. presentation Professional Review (PR) Rules Experience Report writing. He explained what is recognized training, responsible experience, five core competence and the experience report format.

    Eng Wininda Piyarathne gave guidance on Electrical Engineering Charter process.

    Eng. Parakrama Jayasignhe gave an introduction to the IESL Fellowship process. Eng. Arjuna Manamperi summarized the Fellowship process while sharing his own recent experience obtaining it

    The session and the discussion went almost two and half hours. After that there was fellowship  and a dinner sponsored by MESC which ended around 10:00 PM.

    March 22nd of each year being declared by the United Nations (UN) as the World Water Day (WWD) dedicated to WATER the IESL Water Forum  organized its own World Water Day programme to mark the occasion with  presentations by several well-known specialist in the field of water on Wednesday, 23rd March, 2017 at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the institution.

    The focus  of this year’s event was on wastewater and ways to reduce and reuse as over 80% of all the wastewater from our homes, cities, industry and agriculture flows back to nature polluting the environment and losing valuable nutrients and other recoverable materials.

    Wastewater being the theme for this year’s WWD the presentations focused on this subject and were as follows;

    ‘Making Progress in the Urban Water Sector’ By: Dr. Herath Manthrithilaka, Head – Sri Lanka Development Initiative – IWMI

    'Options for reuse and recycling of wastewater' By: Eng. Prof. Mrs Niranjanie Ratnayake, President (Elect), IESL, Senior Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa.

    ‘Water for Irrigation –Do we use right quality in Sri Lanka?’ By: Eng. Ms. Manjula Samarakoon, Chief Engineer - Water Management  Department of Irrigation. .

    ‘Challenges & Future Trends in Wastewater Disposal’ By:  Eng. Dhanesh Gunatilake, Waste Water Treatment Specialist NWS & DB.

    ‘Sustainable Development Goals and Waste water’ By: Eng. Ananda Jayaweera, Water & Sanitation Specialist.

    A ‘Question & Answer Session followed the presentations. The large audience comprised of members of the institution as well as the public.

    Women Engineers’ Day 2017 and WEF - AGM

    The Women Engineers’ Day 2017 organized by the Women Engineers’ Forum (WEF) of the IESL was held on Monday, 20th March, 2017 at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium  of the institution. 

    The Ambassador to the Netherlands in Sri Lanka, Her Excellency Mrs. Joanne Doornewaard graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event commenced with the national anthem and lighting  of  the traditional oil lamp. Eng. (Mrs.) Mangala Wickramanayke – Chairperson –WEF delivered the welcome address and this was followed by the Chief Guest’s address. Dr. Achela K. Fernando, Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Griffith School of Engineering Brisbane, Queensland, Australia delivered the  Guest Speech  on  “Addressing gender-imbalance in Engineering”. Large number of women engineer members of the IESL participated. 

    The AGM of the WEF held thereafter to select the new office bearers and Mrs. Mangala Wickramanayake was re-elected as the New Chair person for the next session. The Women Engineers’ Day activities concluded with Lunch.
