    IESL, JIY Competition Promotes Global Competition Through Intel ISEF The Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) 2015, for selecting the cream of creative and innovative among Sri Lankan school children for participation in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2015 to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA was conducted at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka on 26 th February 2015. The Intel ISEF is where the best of world’s best young scientists and inventors from over 60 countries come together each year to share their ideas, showcase their cutting edge science and engineering projects and win awards and scholarships. 

    The SLSEF is a joint effort where the Ministry of Education, National Science Foundation (NSF), Intel® EM Limited-Sri Lanka Liaison Office and the IESL had joined hands since year 2007 to promote creativity and innovation among the country’s younger generation. Every year 20 competitors are selected from two separate competitions, the Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition conducted by the IESL and the Science Research Project Competition (SRPC) conducted by the NSF, to compete at the SLSEF to select three of the best among them to participate at an international level in the Intel ISEF held in USA

    A guest lecture on “Engineer in Society” was organized by IESL Ampara District Centre for the first year engineering students of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, Oluvil on 02 March 2015 at the Common Core Programme Centre. This lecture was delivered by Eng. Arjuna Manamperi, Chair of Sectional Committee on Mechanical Engineering, IESL. Around 70 engineering undergraduate students participated.

    The IESL New Zealand Chapter was ceremonially inaugurated by the President of the IESL, Eng. (Dr.) S.B.Wijekoon on 31st January, 2015

    at St. Pauls Methodist Church Hall, 12, St. Vincent Avenue, Remuera, Auckland. A large gathering of Sri Lankan engineers domiciled in New Zealand attended the inauguration which was followed by Dinner. The ceremony was organized by the Interim Committee of the chapter  headed by its President,  Gregory Shahane De Costa.

    The IESL Rajarata Chapter became the first ever provincial branch of the IESL to have its own building facility when IESL President, Eng. S.B.Wijekoon declared open its new office premises at No.55 Puttalam Road, Pandulagama, Anuradhapura,  completed under the first phase of construction, on Thursday, 20th November, 2014. Construction work was begun in January, 2013 on a plot of land obtained from the government. Members of the chapter provided the design and layout, while the IESL head office donated a sum of Rs 2 million towards the cost of the construction. Funds were also solicited by the chapter from sponsors.

    The ceremony began with the unveiling of the plaque and ribbon cutting by the President of IESL. This was followed by the lighting of the Traditional Oil Lamp and National Anthem. The large audience comprised of members, distinguished guests and invitees were welcomed by the Hony. Chairman of the chapter, Eng. Sujith Jayasuriya. This was followed by the address by the Past President of IESL – Eng. Tilak De Silva.  The keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Madduma Bandara – Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya  and  Eng. Nihal Rupasinghe –Chairman CECB delivered the    guest speech for the event. This was followed by the address by President of the IESL, Eng. S.B. Wijekoon. Thereafter  Eng. (Ms.) Lalani Wijesekera – Hony. Secretary of the chapter proposed the Vote of Thanks before refreshments concluding the ceremony


    That the Rajarata chapter achieved this distinction is not surprising as it is a reflection of the enduring pioneer spirit in the engineers of the North Central Province where the predecessor of the IESL, the Engineering Association of Ceylon, was first established in 1906 by a few Government Officers serving in the province. Eng. Wimalasena Gamage –President Elect, Prof. (Mrs.) Niranjanie Ratnayake – Vice President, Eng. Arjuna Manamperi – Council Member, Eng. (Mrs.) Arundathi Wimalasuriya – Executive Secretary, IESL and  Eng. (Mrs.) Badra Jayaweera – Deputy Executive Secretary, IESL also graced the occasion with their presence.

    The Techno Sri Lanka 2014 Awards Ceremony was held in grand style with the participation of stallholders, sponsors, distinguished guests, Council members, Past Presidents,  members of the organizing committee  and staff of the IESL Secretariat on Sunday, 2ndNovember, 2014 at the Hotel Galadari, Colombo from 7.00pm onwards.

    Dr. Lawrence Perera – Chairman / CEO, Micro   Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Eng. Shavindranath Fernando –IESL President for the 2013 / 2014 session delivered the welcome address and Eng. S.B. Wijekoon proposed the Vote of Thanks. Winners of various stallholder award categories, IESL Member Raffles and Robogames  and Computer competitions received their awards. Token of appreciations for the various sponsor categories were also presented. In between presentation of awards and speeches the audience was treated to superb entertainment and music. The event concluded with buffet dinner.

    Responding to the demands of its globally dispersed membership the IESL has established overseas chapters in Western Australia, New Zealand and Qatar this year in quick succession. The chapter in Western Australia which was the second  in that country (It already has a chapter in New South Wales Australia established during 2009/2010 sessions) together with that in New Zealand were established in June this year. The Qatar Chapter, the first in West Asia region, was established in September this year. Eng. Shavindranath Fernando – President of IESL for the 2013 / 2014  sessions personally attended the inauguration ceremonies of all  three new chapters.

    This year’s FIESCA Regional seminar held in Colombo saw heavy international participation. Held as part of the Inauguration of the 108th Annual Sessions of the IESL on Saturday, 11th October, 2014 at the Mihilaka Medura, BMICH, the seminar had “Innovative Technologies for Excellence in Engineering” as its theme. 

    It was organized by the IESL in association with the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia, FIESCA. 

    President of the IESL Eng. Shavindranath Fernando delivered the Welcome Address. The   Guest Speaker for the event was Dr. Brahmanand Mohanty who spoke on “ Current Efforts to Achieve Resource Efficiency through the next Wave of Innovation”. 

    The Keynote Address on “Innovation in Engineering Education” was delivered by Prof. Robin King. 

    The Technical Sessions that followed saw country presentations being made from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

    A special memento presented by the  Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) to the IESL during the courtesy visit paid to the IEM by members of the Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee (MESC) of the IESL during their recent tour of Malaysia was officially handed over to the IESL at its Special Council Meeting held on Monday, 22nd September, 2014. Eng. Asantha Sumanarathna , Chairman - MESC handed over the memento to the President – IESL, Eng. Shavindranath Fernando. The MESC held its Annual Get Together for the 2013 / 2014 Annual Session in Malaysia during the period 5th to 9th September, 2014.

    The annual Induction and Graduation ceremony of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) for the year 2014 was held at the BMICH on 22nd August, 2014 from 4.00 pm onwards.

    Dr. S.M.M. Ismail – Vice Chancellor of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Professor Mohan Kumaraswamy – Honorary Professor, University of Hong Kong was the Guest of Honour for the occasion.. This year’s event conferred Chartered Engineer status on 162 Associate Members of the institution, inducting them into the fold of Corporate Members. Forty one students who successfully completed the IESL Engineering Course also received their certificates.

    The event also saw awards being presented to winners of several memorial awards for various categories of engineers and final year undergraduates who obtained best marks for industrial training. School children who excelled in the annual Junior Inventor of the Competition affiliated to the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair also received Scholarships.

    Engineering Excellence Awards Ceremony for 2014 the  premier event for rewarding outstanding  achievements by engineers, engineering enterprises and engineering journalists, organized by the apex professional body for engineering in the country, the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), was held at the Grand Ball Room of the Waters Edge on Friday, 15th August, 2014 from 6.00 pm onwards. Hon. Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Senior Minister for Scientific Affairs graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Hon. Faizer Mustapha, Deputy Minister for Investment Promotion was the Guest of Honor. The most prestigious Eminence in Engineering Award was awarded to Prof. Mohan Munasinghe who was the Vice Chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR4) that  shared the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace, the first–ever Sri Lankan to be associated with the great honour. The Excellence in Engineering Awards for Individuals went to Eng. Ranjith  Jayakumara  Gunawardana (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) and Eng. Liyanarachchige Parakrama Jayasinghe (Mechanical Engineering) in their respective sectors.
