    The portrait of its Immediate Past President, Eng. Shavindranath Fenando, joined the portraits of all the past presidents adorning the hallowed walls of IESL Council Room when it was unveiled at a simple ceremony held at the IESL on Friday, 7th August, 2015. Past Presidents of the present era and Council members attended the event with. Eng.Shavindranath Fernando himself being present.

    Eng. Shavindranath  Fernando obtained his B Sc. Hon. (Eng.) from the University of Moratuwa in 1978 and his M. Eng.(Energy Technology) from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok in 1982.

    He joined IESL in May 1998 and became a Fellow of the IESL in Nov. 1999 and have served in the IESL Council ever since becoming Vice President in the 2010/ 2011 Session, President-Elect in the 2012/2013 Sessions and finally becoming the president in the 2013 / 2014 Sessions.

    He has served as General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board and has previously held the positions of  Additional General Manager - Projects, Project Director – Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project, Deputy General Manager – Generation Planning and Deputy General Manager – Thermal Complex at the CEB.

    The theme of his presidency of the IESL was ‘Year of Professional Excellence’  and he used it as the platform in the pursuit of the  goals and objectives of  the activities he undertook in taking the institution towards its vision.

    It was during his presidency that the IESL finally attained the signatory status of the Washington Accord, a journey that was begun in the year 2003. The International Engineering Alliance (IEA) the umbrella organization that governs seven such international agreements for mutual recognition of engineering education and professional competencies simultaneously renewed the membership of the IESL in the International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA) that it first attained in 2007

    Other highlights of his presidency include the  establishment of overseas chapters in Western Australia, New Zealand and Qatar, the establishment of additional District Centers in    Nuwara Eliya and Puttalam districts, etc.

    He also mooted the concept of Planning Circles, especially for our engineers in the provinces, as a forum to discuss issues related to their profession in informal gathering to find solutions among themselves. IESL’s advice was also sought during that session by state institutions such as the University Grants Commission, Public Utilities Commission, etc. in the formulation of policies to face new challenges. During his presidency the IESL also engaged with professional bodies belonging to other professions in safeguarding well being of professionals in general from attempts to establish policies potentially detrimental to their well being.

    The world’s largest high school science & engineering competition, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2015, a program of Society for Science & the Public, announced its top winners in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA.

    Miss Sanju Subodha Sewwandi from Bomiriya  Central College won a grand award in the Engineering Mechanics category at the Grand Award Ceremony, Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, for her unique project titled ‘Supporting Rod To Climb Stair Case’.

    The opportunity to participate in the international competition arose when she won the Gold Award at the ‘Junior Inventor of the Year-2014’ (JIY-2014) competition, conducted by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL). The Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition promotes creativity and ingenuity among school children from schools all over Sri Lanka participate, initially in awareness programmes & preliminary competitions held at the provincial level with the IESL provincial Chapters, and proceed to the final JIY competition held at the IESL Headquarters in Colombo. Their projects are evaluated by engineers who have experience more than 25 years of engineering & research.

    The Intel ISEF provides a forum for over 1700 high school students from over 70 countries, to showcase their inventions. It is the premier science competition in the globe, exclusively for students in grades 9 to 12.

    Eng Jayavilal Meegoda, Vice President, IESL said, “I am proud to say that JIY winners are capable of competing and winning at any world stage. IESL has been organizing the Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition for the last three decades, mentoring many students to win at an international level. IESL is very happy to be a part in this cultural change that drives the next generation of Sri Lankan students to be innovative”. This is the 16th occasion JIY winners have won recognition at an international levelduring last 08 years.

    Sanju Subodha Sewwandi, who was the runner up at the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF), was part of the Sri Lankan contingent at the Intel ISEF which included Mahendiran Sivatharshan from Hartley College, Jaffna, and Tharindu Pasan, Janith Ishanka & Buddhi Pramodya  from Gnanodaya Central College, Kaluthara.

    Every year winners of the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF), a partnership between the Ministry of Education, the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, the National Science Foundation and Intel are sent to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair which honors some of the world’s most promising, innovative students, innovators and scientists. ISEF finalists are selected annually from hundreds of affiliated fairs. Their projects are then evaluated onsite by more than 1,200 judges from nearly every scientific discipline, each with a Ph.D or the equivalent of six years of related professional experience in one of the scientific disciplines.

    The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, NSW Chapter (IESL NSW Chapter), Engineers’ Night was held on 13 June 2015, in grand style at Castle Grande, Castle Hill.  President of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka Eng (Dr) S B Wijekoon, President of Engineers Australia Sydney Division, Bruce Howard, National President Engineers Australia 2013 Dr. Marlene Kanga, and the IESL NSW Chapter Chair Waruna Kaluarachchi graced this occasion. The key note address was delivered by Scientia Professor Veena Sahajwalla, SMaRT Centre University of New South Wales.

    As per the programme on month of May 2015, IESL-Uva chapter conducted a dhamma discourse on Meditation for today's busy life schedule. It was delivered by “ත්‍රිපිටකාචාර්ය ශාස්ත්‍රපති පූජ්‍ය ඇල්ලේගම පඤ්ඤාසීලThero. The programme was held on 13th of May 2015 at the auditorium of Sri Lanka Telecom, Bandarawela.

    A guest lecture on “Role of a professional engineer in the society” by Prof. Attanayake M.Herath, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya was held on 27th of January 2015 at Hotel Nest Line, Badulla. Around 70 IESL members participated to the program.

    The Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), a body which regulates professional engineering in Ontario has conferred its Order of  Honour on  Eng. N. Madusuthanan, a Sri Lankan engineer. He was inducted to the order at a gala ceremony held on 24th April, 2015 in Toronto , Canada

     Eng. Madusuthanan,  migrated to Canada in 1996 and have successfully obtained his P. Eng in 1999, and FEC (Fellow Engineers Canada) in 2014. The Order of Honour is bestowed in recognition of the conspicuous service by individuals to the engineering profession and Eng. Madusuthanan was among eight individuals, and the only Sri Lankan, who received the honour at this year’s event. (See Media Release issued by PEO for full details)

    A product of the University of Ceylon, he had served at the Irrigation Department and was the Senior Deputy Director of Irrigation at the time of  his retirement in 1990. He is a Fellow of the IESL  and had held many positions including Council Member in the 1980s, Civil Engineering Sectional Committee Chair and was in the committee that started the JIY long with late Dr. Ray Wijewardena. He was also the Chair of the Galle Branch of the IESL in 1982. He was closely associated in the initiation of the AutoCAD and Computer courses at the IESL using  the few computers obtained at the time as a grant from Australian High commission.

    IESL, JIY Competition Promotes Global Competition Through Intel ISEF The Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) 2015, for selecting the cream of creative and innovative among Sri Lankan school children for participation in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2015 to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA was conducted at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka on 26 th February 2015. The Intel ISEF is where the best of world’s best young scientists and inventors from over 60 countries come together each year to share their ideas, showcase their cutting edge science and engineering projects and win awards and scholarships. 

    The SLSEF is a joint effort where the Ministry of Education, National Science Foundation (NSF), Intel® EM Limited-Sri Lanka Liaison Office and the IESL had joined hands since year 2007 to promote creativity and innovation among the country’s younger generation. Every year 20 competitors are selected from two separate competitions, the Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition conducted by the IESL and the Science Research Project Competition (SRPC) conducted by the NSF, to compete at the SLSEF to select three of the best among them to participate at an international level in the Intel ISEF held in USA

    A guest lecture on “Engineer in Society” was organized by IESL Ampara District Centre for the first year engineering students of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, Oluvil on 02 March 2015 at the Common Core Programme Centre. This lecture was delivered by Eng. Arjuna Manamperi, Chair of Sectional Committee on Mechanical Engineering, IESL. Around 70 engineering undergraduate students participated.

    The IESL New Zealand Chapter was ceremonially inaugurated by the President of the IESL, Eng. (Dr.) S.B.Wijekoon on 31st January, 2015

    at St. Pauls Methodist Church Hall, 12, St. Vincent Avenue, Remuera, Auckland. A large gathering of Sri Lankan engineers domiciled in New Zealand attended the inauguration which was followed by Dinner. The ceremony was organized by the Interim Committee of the chapter  headed by its President,  Gregory Shahane De Costa.
