IESL Commemorates 107th Birth Anniversary of Eng. B.D. Rampala

The IESL commemorated the 107th  birth anniversary of the Late Eng. B.D.Rampala at the Wimalasurendra auditorium of its Headquarters on Tuesday, 14th November, 2017 in the presence of a large audience comprised of Council members, Past Presidents, family members of Eng. B D Rampala, engineers of Sri Railways and general membership of the IESL. The memorial oration, delivered by Eng. Dhammika Jayasundara, from Sri Lanka Railways was on the theme “Another Golden Era for Sri Lanka Railways”


In the absence of Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake, President of IESL the formalities of the occasion were led by Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, Immediate Past President. Welcoming the large audience Eng. Meegoda stated that IESL , being the apex body for the engineering profession in the country commemorates the birth anniversaries of engineering greats the country has produced whose names are etched in its rich engineering history. He said that the Late Eng B. D. Rampala who became the first native chief mechanical engineer in 1949, of the then Ceylon Government Railways and went on to become the General Manager during the period 1955 - 1970, in what is now Sri Lanka Railways is one such individual. He further said that the IESL has the added honour of having had Eng. Rapala as its  President in 1958.

Eng. Dhammika Jayasundara who delivered the oration is the Head of Signal Sub Department of Sri Lanka Railways  and has seventeen years of experience in Sri Lanka Railways. He obtained his BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa and a Postgraduate Diploma in e-Governance from the University of Sri Jayawardanapura. In addition, he is a MIE(SL) and a member of IRSE (Institute of Railway Signal Engineers, UK).

The commemoration was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee for the 2017 / 2018 session of the IESL under the chairmanship of Eng. Asela Pathirathna who proposed the Vote of Thanks ending the event
