    The Federation of Engineering Institution of South and Central Asia, FEISCA Regional Conference for the year 2017  on the theme ‘" Energy Policy for Regional Cooperation & Development" was held at the Taj Samudra, Crystal Ballroom on Saturday - October 21, 2017 from 09.00 a.m. onwards. Dr. Suren Batagoda, Secretary, Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy was the Chief Guest while the keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Priyantha Wijeyatunga, Director, South Asia Energy Division, Asian Development Bank on the topic Regional Cooperation for Energy Sector Development in Asia”.

     

     Foreign delegations from FEISCA member organizations in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal attended the conference which was also attended by the local engineering fraternity from public and private organizations including professionals from the industry and academia

     

    Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda holding the parallel presidencies; President - IESL & President - FEISCA welcomed the participants to the conference.

     

    The following country papers were presented during the morning session chaired by Eng. Anura Wijayapala:

     

    “SAARC Intergovernmental Frame Work agreement on energy Cooperation(Electricity)” by Eng.Merrille Goonetilleke

    “Energy Policy for Regional Co-operation and Development: 

    An Indian Perspective” by Eng.  Navinchandra B Vasoya

     “Energy Policy for Regional Co-operation and Development: Bangaadesh”

    by Engr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman

     

    The evening session  saw the following papers being presented with: Prof. HY.Ranjith Perera being the session chairman the session:

     

    “Development of Power and National Power Policy, Pakistan”

    by Eng (Dr.). Izhar Ul Haq

    “Regional cooperation in energy: A policy framework for investment and transfer pricing in South Asia”

    by Dr.Tilak Siyabalapitiya

    “Evolution of Energy Policy in Sri Lanka: The Past, Present & Future”

    by Eng.Harsha Wickramasinghe

     

    The presentation of papers was followed by a panel discussion which was chaired by Eng. Shavindranath Fernando, Past President of IESL. Participants too were given the opportunity to field questions to the panel at the end of the discussion.


    The Vote of Thanks was proposed by the President Elect for the 2016 / 2017 sessions who has been already inducted as the new President at the inauguration  of  2017 / 2018 sessions held the previous day at the BMICH

    The 111th Annual Sessions of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka was ceremonially inaugurated on Friday, 20th October 2017, at the Main Hall, BMICH in the presence of a large gathering of participants.


    Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Metropolis and Western Development graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Hon. Dr. Harsha De Silva, Deputy Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs was Guest of Honour. The Keynote Speaker was Prof Tim Broyd, President, Institution of Civil Engineers, London.  Foreign delegates from FEISCA member organizations in India,    Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal also participated in the event.


    The highlight of the inauguration of annual sessions held in October of each year is the handing over of the mantle of presidency to the incoming president by the outgoing president after a reign of I year as president from October of the previous year.


    Eng. (Prof.) Mrs.Niranjanie Ratnayake was inducted this year as President of IESL for 2017 / 2018 sessions. In her inaugural presidential address at the event she laid out her plans for rapidly advancing on the institutions stated missions towards achieving its vision. (Link to Presidential Address)


    Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, the outgoing President in his speech while describing the achievements of his session also wished the incoming President and Council success in their endeavor towards reaching the goals of the new session 2017 / 2018. 


    The event also saw certificates being presented to those admitted to the status of Honorary Life Fellows, Fellows and International Professional Engineers. Awards and certificates were also given to winners of special and memorial awards.


    School children who are winners of the IESL Junior Inventor of the Year 2017 competition were also awarded at the event


    The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Eng. (Prof.) T.M. Pallewatte, the President Elect for 2017 / 2018 sessions.

    The IESL held its 4th National Engineering Conference on Friday, 22nd September, 2017 from 2.00 p.m. onwards at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo. Hon. Harindra Fernando, Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure  graced the occasion as Chief Guest.


    This year’s theme for the event was “Engineering The Digital Economy”.


    Welcoming the capacity audience to the conference Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda,  President of IESL , emphasized the appropriateness and relevance of this year’s theme to the current times and trends in the country’s development.


    The Chief Guest, in his speech highlighted the vital role engineers have in developing the country

    The 143rd  birth anniversary of Late Eng. D J Wimalasurendra was commemorated at the IESL on 18th  September 2017 with a memorial lecture on “Maintenance & Management of Hydro Power Assets” delivered by Eng. G.A. Jayantha, Additional General Manager, Asset Management – CEB.


    The lecture was preceded by the lighting of the traditional Oil Lamp and garlanding of the portrait of the late professor by the Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, President of IESL. . Family members of the late professor were also present at the event which was attended by Past Presidents and members of the IESL.

    The IESL commemorated the 110th  birth anniversary of Late Prof. E O E Pereira, considered as the  Father of Engineering Education in Sri Lanka, on 13th September 2017 with a memorial lecture on “Green Entrepreneurship - A promising path towards a sustainable future” by Eng. (Prof). Ranjith Dissanayake, Senior Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya.


    The lecture was preceded by the lighting of the traditional Oil Lamp and garlanding of the portrait of the late professor by Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, President of IESL. Family members of the late professor were also present at the event which was attended by Past Presidents and members of the IESL.

    The annual Ray Wijewardene Memorial Lecture for the year was held at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) on Monday, 7th September 2017.  Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, Founder CEO and chief architect of WSO2 delivered this year’s lecture on the topic  ‘Nobody to Leader:  Achieving Global Leadership  with Software' which dealt with status of software industry in Sri Lanka, its penetration in to world markets, and future prospects.

     

    The memorial lecture was organized jointly by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka and Ray Wjewardene Charitable Trust, a  charitable organization established for the promotion of the vision and ideas of Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene . The lecture was preceded by the traditional lighting of the Oil Lamp and garlanding of the portrait of Late Dr Ray Wijewardene by the President of  the IESL,  Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda. The Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene  Memorial Lecture was  first held in 2011 and this is the 7th lecture of its kind to held by the IESL. Welcoming the capacity audience that attended,  Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda described the Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene as a person who excelled in many human endeavors.  Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, Chairman of the Ray Wijewardene Charitable Trust briefed the audience  about  the work that the Trust is involved in promoting the vision and ideas of Later Dr. Ray Wijewardene.

    The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka  held its annual Induction and Graduation Ceremony for the year, 2017 on Friday, 25th August, 2017 at the Main Hall of the BMICH from 3.00 pm onwards. Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Vidya Jyothi Eng. (Prof.) KKYW Perera, Chancellor  of the University of Moratuwa  was the Guest of Honour at the event.


    This year’s event saw the induction of 287 Associate Members of the IESL in to the corporate membership as Chartered Engineers and 82 students of the IESL Engineering Course receiving their certificates having successfully completed the course.


    Scholarship winning school children of the Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) Competition – 2016 also received their scholarships at the event. Pioneered by the IESL. with the purpose of inculcating creativity and invention among school  children, many of the JIY winners have gone on to win at the national level competition ‘Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair’ and thereafter  proved their ability to compete  and win event at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition held annually in the USA.  The event is also an occasion for rewarding winners of various memorial award schemes worked out by IESL to promote practical orientation among final year undergraduates encouraging industrial training and project work, research among young engineers, performance at Professional Review exams, etc. all with the aim of uplifting the profession.

    The portrait of Eng. Wimalasena Gamage, Immediate Past President of the IESL joined those of its other Past Presidents along the hallowed walls of the Council Room of the institution when it was unveiled by Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, President of the IESL, at a ceremony attended by Past Presidents and Council Members on  Friday, 4th August, 2017 at around 4.30 pm.


    Eng. Meegoda, President of IESL, described Eng. Gamage’s  presidency as symbolized by its coinciding with the 110th year anniversary of the institution and the many religious and auspicious activities that were successfully held in addition to regular events such as National Engineering Conference, Induction & Graduation Ceremony and the Annual Sessions Seminar.


    Eng. Gamage in what he described as his final ‘ final words’ said   that when he first entered the chamber as council member in October in the year 1999, he never had any intention to become the president of IESL but that his colleagues had encouraged him to continue as council member and finally elected him as president.
