    IESL Engineering Excellence Awards 2018


    The Engineering Excellence Awards 2018, organized by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL); the apex body of the Engineering profession in the country was held at the BMICH, Colombo on 27th of March 2019. The chief guest at the event was the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.  IESL President Eng. (Prof) T M Pallewatta, Council Members, past presidents and CEO of the IESL also participated at this occasion.


    Awards were comprised of two main categories; Engineering Excellence for Individuals and Organizations. This year following awards were bestowed.

    The Excellence in Engineering Awards scheme was founded with the aim to encourage and celebrate the excellence in the science and the practice of engineering by rewarding the best and the finest of its members, individuals, organizations and enterprises in Sri Lanka for their outstanding accomplishments and achievements related to engineering.


    “Sri Lanka, in particular, has a great engineering tradition, with its ancient kings engaged in great engineering wonders such as irrigation networks, stupas, fortresses, gardens etc. IESL as the premier body for professional engineers in Sri Lanka is bound to carry this great tradition and celebrate achievements and accomplishments of our fellow engineers to encourage them to the pursuit of excellence in the profession” said the president of the IESL Eng. (Prof.) T M Pallewatta, addressing the audience.


    The next engineering excellence awards will be held in 2021 and the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka wishes to carry this tradition as it is their duty and commitment to the engineering profession in Sri Lanka.

    WOMEN ENGINEERS’ DAY CELEBRATION & 10th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE WOMEN ENGINEERS’ FORUM


    Women Engineers Forum (WEF) of the IESL marked the International Women’s day by holding The Women Engineers’ Day 2019 and the 10th Annual General Meeting on March 08, 2019 from 3.30 pm onwards at Wimalasurendra Auditorium at IESL premises with the participation of women engineers representing the industry as well as academia. The event was graced by several Prominent Personalities in the field of Engineering. Eng. (Ms.) Helen Claire Dauris, Civil Engineer and wife of British Ambassador for Sri Lanka was the Chief Guest and Ms. Dilrukshi Dias Wickramasignhe, Presidents’ Counsel was the Guest Speaker.  They were joined by other distinguished guests, the first lady Engineer Dr. (Ms.) Premala Sivasegaram, the first lady president of IESL, Eng. (Ms.) Lanka Haturusinha, the immediate past president of IESL Prof. Niranjanie Ratnayake, past chairpersons of WEF of IESL, fellow women engineers of IESL and other distinguished invitees.


    The gathering was warmly welcomed by the outgoing chairperson of WEF of IESL, Eng. (Ms.) Shyama Gunawardana.  Chief Guest Eng. (Ms.) Helen Claire Dauris shared her experience as a Civil Engineer. The Guest Speaker for the day, Ms. Dilrukshi Dias Wickramasignhe delivered a speech on “Women’s Role in Society” emphasizing the importance of spiritual and moral development. It was an interesting interactive session.

     

    WEF of IESL, awarded a special award, the inaugural IESL Women Engineers’ Forum award on “Encouragement of Young Women to become Engineers“. Ms. Chathuni Hansani Wasantha Wijegunawardena who obtained the first place in the country in Physical Science stream at the G. C. E. Advance Level Examination in 2018. The purpose of this recognition is to encourage young women to take up a carrier in engineering which is essential for the development of Sri Lanka.


    Celebration of IESL Women Engineers’ Day 2018 was successfully concluded and was followed by the 10th Annual General Meeting of WEF from 5.30 pm onwards. Eng. (Ms.) Shyama Gunawardana has re-elected as the chairperson for the WEF of IESL for the year 2019/2020 session. Eng. (Ms.) Devika Abeysuriya, Eng. (Ms.) Lilani Ruhunage and Eng. (Ms.) Dulmini Indrasiri was re-elected as Vice Chairperson and two joint Secretaries respectively. Eng. (Ms.) Srimathi Senadeera was appointed as the Treasurer and Eng. (Ms,) Kushmy Senaratne was appointed as the Social Secretary. WEF of IESL enthusiastically waiting to serve the women engineers in Sri Lanka with more creative, inspirational and innovative thoughts for the year 2019/2020 session.

    Leaving No One Behind – IESL World Water Day 2019


    The Water Forum,  water arm of the  Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) was established for spreading awareness amongst the population and all concerned, particularly among Engineers working in the water sector about efficient water management by adopting best practices. The mission of Water Forum is to promote and propagate the concept of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) and facilitate the innovation, technology development for conservation and management of water resources. The Forum being a knowledge platform will facilitate the exchange of ideas, opinions and groom professional standing on water-related issues relevant for Sri Lanka.

     

    To accomplish this purpose, the Water Forum is conducting conferences, meetings, workshops, seminars, symposia, group meetings, public lectures, panel discussions, World Water Day commemorations etc for water sector professionals as well as general public. The Water Forum extend the support to the Government and other regulatory bodies to evolve and make professional standing policy recommendations in the fields of development, conservation and management of water resources based on the experience gained and exchange of knowledge and performance of existing systems and projects.  The Water Forum develop partnerships with academia and research organizations and Non-Government Organizations working in the water sector to enhance knowledge and experience of all stakeholders and to encourage development and use of advanced technologies, engineering and management practices in conservation and management of water resources.  The forum consists of experts and professional from drinking water, irrigation, agriculture,  power production, environment, water quality, wastewater, groundwater and rainwater harvesting sectors who are contributing to the development of water sector representing all branches of water-related systems.


    The IESL Water Forum every year marks the World Water Day, a major event in the water calendar. In this year too the Water Forum in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee organized a  “Programme”  to mark the  World Water Day 2019 themed “Leaving No One Behind”. The event was held on 21st  March 2019 commenced at 2.30 pm at Wimalasurendra Auditorium of IESL followed by a fellowship. Eng. Prof. T.M. Pallewatte, President of IESL was the chief guest for the event. This prestigious event was excelled by six guest lectures followed by question and answer sessions and open discussions.


    The welcome address was presented by Eng. Dr. Kamal Laksiri, Chairman of Water Forum. The first guest lecture was delivered by Eng. Ananda Jayaweera , Technical Advisor of Regional Centre for Sanitation under the Ministry of City Planning Water Supply & Higher Education regarding  "Leaving No One Behind" which is the theme of World Water Day 2019. The second guest lecture was conducted by Eng. Lalith De Alwis, Director (Water Resources Management) of Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Livestock Development, Irrigation and Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development on an expedient topic of "Strategic Action Plan to Combat Climate Change in Water Sector in Sri Lanka".  Eng. D.W.C. Dayarathne, General Manager of Engineering Infotechs Ideas (Pvt) Ltd. delivered the third guest lecture on       “Providing water to northern dry zone areas of Sri Lanka” which was considered as a burning issue subjected to several discussions during last decade. A comprehensive question and answer session and panel discussion were conducted after the first session of lectures.


    Dr. R.M.S.K. Rathnayake,  Director (Pollution Control) of Central Environment Authority presented the fourth guest lecture regarding “Environmental Impacts of Wastewater and Control Strategies in Sri Lanka” addressing policies, rules and regulations for minimize the impact of unsafe discharge of wastewater to the environment.  The fifth guest lecture on the convenient topic of  "Are We Safe with Future Agricultural Water?"  was conducted by Dr. G.A.S. Ginigaddara , Senior Lecturer of Faculty of Agriculture of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka; highlighting current and future trends of agriculture water usage and respective impacts. Eng. S.A. Rasheed, Project Director of Greater Colombo Water & Wastewater Management    Improvement Programme under the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) conducted the sixth guest lecture on “Renewing Water Supply for Developing Colombo” describing the planned development and implementation strategies. A comprehensive question and answer session and panel discussion will be followed by the second session of lectures.


    The Water Forum had conducted an art competition and essay competition for school children with the purpose of improving the water-related awareness among students. The forum received an active response from various schools and selected the top three ranked essays and arts. The awarding ceremony of art and essay competition was held parallel to the IESL World Water Day Programme 2019.


    Let us hold hands in hands and move forward without leaving no-one behind for a better tomorrow while conserving nature’s precious gift; water for future generations.

    115th birth anniversary of the father of electrical engineering education in Sri Lanka - Eng. (Prof.) R. H. Paul - was commemorated by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka with a memorial lecture held at the institution Auditorium on 8th February 2019, in the presence of a large audience.

     

    This year’s memorial oration was delivered by Eng. (Prof.) J. P. Karunadasa, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, on the theme “Are we ready to face challenges in a power electronics rich power system? “

     

    Welcoming the attendees to the 38th consecutive Prof. R. H. Paul memorial lecture, Eng. (Prof) T.M. Pallewatta, the president of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka said that “Prof. R.H. Paul devoted every second of his life to form an eminent engineering profession in Sri Lanka and to enrich the quality of it to reach the international standards. Also, today we are fortunate to have competent electrical engineers who followed the footsteps of those of Prof. Paul and became exceptional personalities in the electrical engineering field.”

     

    The event was organized by the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Sectional Committee of the IESL.  Council Members, Past Presidents and other members of the institution and relatives of Prof. R.H. Paul joined with IESL to commemorate the birth anniversary of this son of the soil.

    IESL commenced its operations for the year 2019 – New Year – with a small function organized by staff members, with the participation of Eng. (Prof) Pallewatta, President of IESL, CEO/Executive secretary and Deputy secretary.


    The celebration took place at the members lounge, IESL Colombo.  Addressing the staff members, the president said “I want to take this opportunity to appreciate you all for your accomplishments and achievements for last year. Let’s continue to see success as we did last year. May this New Year bring happiness and joy in your life. Wish you and your families a very happy new year”.


    Staff members were treated for New Year delicacies and New Year greetings were shared concluding the function.

    Silent night! Holy night! All is calm but IESL. Because it is Christmas time!


    IESL Christmas party was held on Saturday, 15th of December 2018 with delight and fun with IESL members and their families in pleasant settings of the members’ lounge of IESL. Around 150 participants were treated to a variety of fun games and the climax of the event was the arrival of Santa Claus with a bag full of presents. Though there weren’t any reindeers, surely the children loved it.


    The celebration started at around 6.45 pm with the welcome speech by Eng. (Prof) T.M. Pallewatte, President of IESL. The audience was blessed by Rev. Fr. Srian Ranasinghe, Parish Priest of Fatima’s Church, Maradana.


    Christmas carols were sung in both Sinhala and English to celebrate Christmas and prayed for good health and good fortune. The calm mood of the celebration was dissolved with the games for children and competitions for adults. The event was full of energy and enthusiasm. The winners of the games and competitions were generously treated by Santa Claus.


    The celebration concluded with vote of thanks by immediate past president Eng. (Prof) Mrs. Niranjanee Ratnayake.

    Farewell Party of the immediate past president Eng. (Prof) Mrs. Niranjanee Ratnayake was held on 14th December 2018 at members’ Lounge, IESL. All staff members of IESL joined parting of a great mentor and gentle leader. Eng. J. Meegoda and vice president Eng. A. Manamperi also joined this small event of felicitation. 


    Eng. N. Abesekara, CEO/ ES of IESL welcomed all the staff members and thanked the past president for her exceptional service not only to raise the standards of IESL, but also engineering profession in SL. Eng. (Prof) Mrs. Niranjanee Ratnayake addressing the staff said she was so pleased and happy to work with the staff and thanked each and every one of them for their contribution and commitment. Further, she requested the staff members to give the same support she was given during her time to the new president.


    All were treated for a delightful meal and warm hugs and handshakes of gratitude were shared with the parting president Eng. (Prof) Mrs. Niranjanee Ratnayake at the end of the gathering.

    IESL commemorated the 108th  birth anniversary of the Late Eng. B.D.Rampala at the Wimalasurendra auditorium of its Headquarters on Thursday, 14th November, 2018 in the presence of a large audience comprised of Council members, Past Presidents, family members of Eng. BD Rampala, engineers of Sri Railways and general membership of the IESL.


    The memorial oration for this year was delivered by Eng. M.J.D. Fernando, General Manager, Sri Lanka Railways and was on the theme “Digitalization of Sri Lanka Railways by 2022”


    Eng. (Prof.) T.M. Pallewatta, President of IESL welcoming the audience said that the Late Eng B. D. Rampala became the first native Chief Mechanical Engineer,  in 1949, of the then ‘Ceylon Government Railways’ and went on to become the General Manager during the period 1955 - 1970, in what is now Sri Lanka Railways, and   through his initiatives revolutionized the country’s railways and the way we live in. The IESL has the honour of having had Eng. B.D. Rapala as its  President  in the year 1958..


    The commemoration was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee for the 2018 / 2019 session of the IESL under the chairmanship of Eng. Asela Pathirathna who proposed the Vote-of- Thanks ending the event.

    The first ever Engineering Entrepreneurship BOOT-CAMP (EEB) for training and development of engineering entrepreneurs in the country was held  on 3rd, 4th and 5th  of November, 2018  at the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) Head Quarters, 120 /15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.


    As the premier professional organization for engineers in Sri Lanka with a membership of over 15,000 qualified engineers representing all the engineering disciplines, the  IESL plays a major role in the career development of Engineers.

    Conceived with the idea of supporting engineering entrepreneurs in the country, Engineering Entrepreneurship BOOT-CAMP (EEB) is intended to provide knowledge and skills for Engineering Entrepreneurship. It will create leaders for tomorrow’s high-tech ventures.


    The 3-day training and development programme  with residential facilities, food and beverages gave far and wide coverage for engineering entrepreneur startups from all over the country. The  EEB programme was comprehensively designed as a boot-camp where teams will get mentoring by experts; develop the entrepreneurial skills and strategies to develop sustainable business models. The knowledge sharing environment within teams created the ecosystem for entrepreneurial activities. Thus, EEB  facilitated the teams to work continuously towards development of the business plans to obtain funds or loans from Enterprise Sri Lanka programme/ investors.


    The Objective of the EEB programme is to provide comprehensive result driven Entrepreneurship curriculum for the Engineers to develop start-up ideas/proposals and goal driven training to pitch their start-up for the investors/ Public-Private-Partnerships and Enterprise Sri Lanka programme facilitated financial institutions.  The EEB is initiated from the Entrepreneurship forum of the Professional Affairs Committee of the IESL.

    The presentation of Technical Papers for 112th Annual Sessions was held at the IESL headquarters on 18th Thursday and 19th Friday, October, 2018 from 9.00 am both days. Response to this year’s Call for Papers saw an unprecedented number of abstracts and full papers being submitted, and the 95 papers that were finally accepted were published by the IESL as Technical Paper Transactions (Part B) of the institution and they were presented by the authors in parallel session. As in the previous year, participation in the presentation during the morning sessions of the two days were very strong at the Wimalasurendra auditorium.
