The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) is a full member of the Engineers Mobility Forum (EMF) and has the Provisional Membership of the Washington Accord (WA), two internationally recognized agreements.
The EMF is an agreement that facilitates cross-border practice by experienced professional engineers. In general this means that a professional engineer of one EMF member country will be able to practice in another EMF member country without being required to obtain any additional qualifications or experience. The current EMF signatory countries are Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, United Kingdom and United States.
To obtain the Professional engineer status from the IESL under EMF criteria, an applicant has to be a Chartered Engineer with a 4 year engineering degree recognized by IESL plus a minimum of 7 years experience after graduation of which at least 2 years should have been in a responsible position. The assessment will be through a competency based assessment scheme and the applicant should maintain a satisfactory level of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) annually.
The Washington Accord is an agreement whereby a signatory country will mutually recognize the engineering academic qualifications accredited by the other signatories. Currently all the EMF signatory countries except India and Sri Lanka have obtained full signatory status. The IESL although is still a Provisional Member, its accreditation procedure for 4 year full time B. Sc. Engineering degree programmes is accepted by the international body. The IESL intends to apply for Full Membership of Washington Accord shortly and if successful, it will pave the way for the international acceptance of Sri Lankan engineering degree programmes.
