Membership Classes
The Classes of membership shall be as follows
Corporate Member Non-Corporate Member
Fellow Honorary Fellow
Member Associate Member
  Associates
  Companions
  Students

Corporate Members of the Institution shall be entitled to the use of the following
abbreviated designations appropriate to their class:

Fellow FIE(Sri Lanka)
Member MIE(Sri Lanka)

Associate Members shall be entitled to the use of the following abbreviated designation AMIE(Sri Lanka)
Associates shall be entitled to the use of the following abbreviated designation AIE(Sri Lanka)
 
Membership Grades
 
Fellow – should
Be more than 35 years of age
Be a Member or have met the requirements for Membership
Have at least five years of responsible experience superior to that required for Membership.
  or
Have acquired such eminence in his profession that his admission as a Fellow would in the opinion of the Council advance the interests of the Institution

Member – should
Be more than 25 years of age
Have passed the Institution Examinations or have been exempted from the whole by virtue of having an accredited qualification or part thereof and in the case of partial exemption has passed the subjects from which exemption has not been granted.
Have had sufficient recognized engineering training and responsible experience as be prescribed.
Have an aggregate of engineering education, training and responsible experience which is not less than eight years
At the time of applying (disregarding temporary unemployment) be engaged in the practice of or associated with engineering
  or
Have been accepted for admission as a Member through the Mature Engineering Candidates' Route.
  Special Route to Corporate Membership for Engineers in the IT industry [Approved at 96th AGM October 2002 and valid for period of four (4) years]
Possess an Engineering Degree from an IESL recognized (accredited) University or equivalent qualifications.
Have at least 08 years experience in the IT Field.
Submit a 2500 word report on recognised training and responsible experience.
Face an Interview by a three (3) member Panel
  This scheme will be in force only for a period of Four (4) years to allow a sufficient number of IT Engineers to be admitted as Corporate Members of the IESL.
  After Four (4) years grace period the scheme will cease and IT Engineers will be required to seek admittance to Corporate Membership via the route set PR Rules prevalent at that time.

Companion – should
Be more than 35 years of age
Be engaged in the practice of or associated with engineering, disregarding temporary unemployment.
Have attained a position of responsibility as an Engineer
  or
By virtue of connections with engineering or otherwise be qualified to concur with engineers in the advancement of engineering.

Honorary Fellow – should
  Be a distinguished and eminent person who is invited by Council to this class of membership

Associate Member – should
Be more than 21 years of age
Have passed the Institution Examinations or have been exempted from the whole by virtue of having an accredited qualification or part thereof and in the case of partial exemption has passed the subjects from which exemption has not been granted.

Associate – should
Be not less than 25 years of age
Be holding a post of engineer or one equivalent to that of an engineer in a recognised organization
possess technical qualifications and/or experience as determined by the Council.

Student - should
Be over 16 years of age. However if he is over 35 years of age he shall have to satisfy requirements given below
Have passed such recognised qualifying examinations or sections of such examinations
Be undergoing a regular course of recognised further education
  or
has indentured himself as an apprentice under the supervision of a Corporate Member of the Institution (Mentor).
