Junior Inventor of the Year Competition
The ‘Junior Inventor of the Year Competition' is an annual event organized island wide by the institution to promote creative and innovative thinking amongst school children.
The competition, which began in 1987, is open to all Sri Lankan children in the age group of 12 – 20 years. The students are expected to work independently. They may, if necessary, seek guidance from their teachers, parents or any other close relatives.
The winner of this competition would be awarded the title ‘ Junior Inventor of the Year' in addition to being presented with a gold medal, a cash prize and a certificate. Those who secure the first twenty places would also be awarded medals, prizes and certificates. Five of the winners would be entitled for scholarships, which will cover their university education as well.
The awards would be presented to the winners at the inauguration of our Annual Sessions at the BMICH in October, every year.
All competitors, who are not fortunate enough to win awards, would receive certificates of participation.
Each entry would be judged for its originality, finish, accuracy, degree of improvisation, and incorporation of energy saving and environmentally friendly features. The judges would be drawn from both the industries and the universities, and their decision would be final.
The children, interested in participating in the competition, would be invited to take part in a workshop that will provide a forum to them to discuss their creative ideas with professionals and academics from the field of engineering. The institution bears all their traveling and other lodging expenses incurred in respect of this workshop.
The winners would also get an opportunity to display their inventions to the public at the ‘Techno' exhibition, which would be held concurrently with our Annual Sessions. This will provide them with an opportunity to capture the attention of the media and the industry to their inventions, the products of their creative abilities. Here again the institution takes upon itself the responsibility of bearing all the expenses incurred by the prospective inventors.
Already, several companies have expressed interest in some of the inventions that had won prizes at the last several competitions.
There is also a proposal to set up an Inventors' Club to assist the members to seek patent rights, prototype building and product marketing.
The competition has the support of the Post Graduate Institute of Management and the Lanka Electricity Company (Pvt) Ltd.
The details will be notified through the newspapers. |
